# U.S. Federal Holiday Calendar for Legal Scheduling

Published and updated 2026-10-04 · RuleX editorial team · United States · American English

The U.S. federal holiday calendar follows 5 U.S.C. § 6103 and identifies standard observed dates separately from the holiday itself. Use it to prepare a matter schedule, then check the district’s official holiday calendar, state holidays and closure orders when computing a federal civil deadline under Rule 6.

## Statutory and observed dates appear separately.

A fixed-date holiday can fall on a weekend. OPM’s standard federal schedule identifies the corresponding weekday observance; the table keeps both dates visible. Floating holidays follow their statutory weekday formula.

Choose the year you are scheduling. Copy the relevant dates into your matter calendar, then open the court’s schedule for its own closures and filing instructions.

## Connect the calendar to the deadline.

Federal civil day-count periods include intermediate holidays. The holiday matters to the Rule 6(a) adjustment when it falls on the last day. The district’s state holidays and additional closure orders can also affect that calculation.

Use the federal deadline calculator to enter the event and period. Include the applicable additional dates and retain the court’s order or calendar as part of the scheduling record.
