Official OPM holiday calendar01 / PRACTICE NOTES
The 2027 dates, with three observed weekdays and a year-end observance.
The federal holiday dates for 2027 are Friday, January 1: New Year’s Day; Monday, January 18: Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.; Monday, February 15: Washington’s Birthday; Monday, May 31: Memorial Day; Saturday, June 19: Juneteenth National Independence Day; Sunday, July 4: Independence Day; Monday, September 6: Labor Day; Monday, October 11: Columbus Day; Thursday, November 11: Veterans Day; Thursday, November 25: Thanksgiving Day; Saturday, December 25: Christmas Day.
OPM's schedule moves a holiday that falls on a weekend to the nearest weekday: Juneteenth National Independence Day is observed on Friday, June 18; Independence Day is observed on Monday, July 5; Christmas Day is observed on Friday, December 24; New Year’s Day 2028 is observed on Friday, December 31.
The table above lists the same dates with the weekday. OPM's 2027 schedule observes Juneteenth on Friday, June 18, Independence Day on Monday, July 5 and Christmas on Friday, December 24. The 2028 schedule observes New Year's Day on Friday, December 31, 2027, which is why the observance appears in the 2027 table.
Each of those four dates is a weekday on which a court calendar can close while the statutory holiday sits on a weekend. They are the dates to check against the district's published calendar when a matter has deadlines in late June, early July and the last week of December.
02 / PRACTICE NOTES
The statutory date and the observed date are both in the table.
The statute sets the holiday date: Juneteenth National Independence Day on June 19, Independence Day on July 4, Christmas on December 25 and New Year's Day on January 1 (5 U.S.C. § 6103(a)). In 2027, June 19 and December 25 fall on Saturdays and July 4 falls on a Sunday. OPM identifies the weekday observed for most federal employees: the preceding Friday for a Saturday holiday and the following Monday for a Sunday holiday.
Fed. R. Civ. P. 6(a)(6)(A) refers to the day set aside by statute for observing each holiday, and a last day that falls on a Saturday or Sunday already moves under Rule 6(a)(1)(C). The observed weekday matters when the court itself closes that day. Check the district's calendar and then use the calculator's observed-closure option, or enter the specific closure dates.
Rule 6(a)(6)(C) adds the holidays of the state where the district court is located for periods measured after an event. A federal calendar is the first layer, and the state list is the second.
03 / PRACTICE NOTES
Four 2027 counts that cross an observed day.
A 30-day period triggered on Wednesday, May 19, 2027 reaches Friday, June 18, 2027, the observed date for Juneteenth. With the OPM observed closures selected, the deadline moves through June 19, June 20 and lands on Monday, June 21, 2027. Without the option, the last day is June 18.
A 14-day period triggered on Monday, June 21, 2027 reaches Monday, July 5, 2027, the observed date for Independence Day. With the observed closures selected, the deadline is Tuesday, July 6, 2027; without them, Monday, July 5.
A 30-day period triggered on Wednesday, November 24, 2027 reaches Friday, December 24, 2027, the observed date for Christmas. With the observed closures selected, the deadline moves to Monday, December 27, 2027.
A 14-day period triggered on Friday, December 17, 2027 reaches Friday, December 31, 2027, the observed date for New Year's Day 2028. With the observed closures selected, the deadline falls on Monday, January 3, 2028. The calculator covers dates through 2030, so a deadline that crosses the new year stays inside the tool.
04 / PRACTICE NOTES
Plan the year: dates to load once, deadlines to compute many times.
Load the 2027 calendar into the matter schedule at the start of the year: New Year's Day on Friday, January 1, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday on Monday, January 18 and Washington's Birthday on Monday, February 15 open the year, and Memorial Day on Monday, May 31 follows. The fall carries Labor Day on Monday, September 6, Columbus Day on Monday, October 11, Veterans Day on Thursday, November 11 and Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 25.
Courts publish their own closure notices, and a presidential or congressional declaration of a holiday adds a legal holiday under Rule 6(a)(6)(B). When the clerk's office is inaccessible on a last day, Rule 6(a)(3) extends the time to the first accessible day that is not a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday.
- Select 2027 in the calendar above and copy the dates into the matter schedule.
- Add the state holidays of the district and the court's published closure days.
- Confirm whether the court closes on the OPM observed dates.
- Run each deadline through the calculator and calendar the result with the rule beside it.
