How to Evaluate a Legal AI Trial in One Afternoon
Test any legal AI in four hours: one closed matter, one deliverable and a scorecard for record fidelity, sources, drafting, workflow and price.
The working answer
Evaluate a legal AI trial with one closed matter, one deliverable and one scorecard. Upload the documents, state the jurisdiction, ask for the memorandum, open every cited source and count the corrections before you would sign. In four hours you can score record fidelity, authority, drafting, workflow and price. The RuleX 7-day trial starts without a card and is built for that test.
01 / PRACTICE NOTES
RuleX is built for this test.
We recommend running the afternoon test on RuleX first, because it brings the whole test into one place. Create a case, upload up to twenty documents, ask for the deliverable, answer the questions RuleX raises, open the sources and export the Word file. The 7-day trial starts without a credit card, and Standard is $39.90 per month if the result earns it.
The same test works on any other tool you are considering. Keep the matter, the instructions and the scorecard identical so the comparison measures the tools and not the questions.
02 / PRACTICE NOTES
Prepare the matter before the clock starts.
Pick a closed matter you know well, so omissions and errors are easy for you to spot. Choose five to ten documents that represent the file: the key agreement or pleading, correspondence, an order and a few exhibits. Write one paragraph with the jurisdiction, the question and the deliverable you would normally produce.
Use only material you are authorized to process. Model Rule 1.6(c) asks lawyers to make reasonable efforts to prevent the inadvertent or unauthorized disclosure of client information, and ABA Formal Opinion 512 identifies confidentiality among the duties that touch generative AI. Read the provider’s terms and privacy policy first, and use a closed matter or redacted documents when you are unsure.
03 / PRACTICE NOTES
Hour one: intake and record fidelity.
Upload the documents and ask for a matter brief: the parties, the dates, the amounts, the claims and the open questions. Check every name, date and number against the originals. A tool that gets the record right is worth continuing with, because every later step builds on it.
Ask RuleX to keep the original filename beside each statement in the brief, so you can find the document behind it in seconds. Scanned pages are read with OCR, and a hearing recording becomes a transcript with identified speakers inside the case.
04 / PRACTICE NOTES
Hour two: research and the source trail.
Ask for the controlling authority for your court and the issue. Open the decisive statutes, rules and opinions. Check that the case name, court and pinpoint are correct, that the quoted language appears in the source and that the holding supports the proposition. The guide on verifying case citations before filing sets out the full checklist.
Score the tool on whether it separates federal from state law, controlling from persuasive authority, and whether each citation opens a real source. RuleX links each authority to its source so the check starts at the answer.
05 / PRACTICE NOTES
Hours three and four: draft, export and score.
Request the deliverable you would normally produce. A strong tool asks what changes the document before it writes, such as the relief sought, the procedural posture and the missing evidence. Answer its questions, review the draft and export it to Word. Time the work from the first prompt to a version you would be willing to sign, and count the corrections.
Then test reuse. Turn your review process into an agent or a saved workflow, run it on a second matter and see whether it saves the same time twice. Finish by pricing the plan you would actually choose, with its term and renewal.
Seven criteria at two points each total fourteen. A tool that scores twelve or more has earned a second matter, and a score in that range on your own file is a stronger signal than any demonstration. Keep the filled scorecard with the matter so the next evaluation starts from a baseline.
- Record fidelity: names, dates, amounts and document references match the originals (0 to 2 points).
- Authority: the cited sources exist, open and support the propositions (0 to 2 points).
- Questions first: the tool asks about the relief, the posture and the missing evidence before drafting (0 to 2 points).
- Draft quality: the structure and reasoning are ready for attorney review (0 to 2 points).
- Editable output: the Word file keeps formatting and opens without repair (0 to 2 points).
- Reusable workflow: an agent or saved process runs correctly on a second matter (0 to 2 points).
- Total price: the monthly cost, term and renewal fit your practice (0 to 2 points).
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to evaluate a legal AI tool?
One afternoon is enough for a first decision. Use a closed matter, one deliverable and a scorecard, and spend about an hour each on intake, research, drafting and scoring.
What should I upload during a legal AI trial?
Upload five to ten documents from a closed matter you are authorized to process, such as the agreement or pleading, correspondence, an order and exhibits. RuleX analyzes up to twenty documents at once.
How do I judge the quality of a legal AI draft?
Check the facts against the record, open every cited source, confirm the pinpoint and holding, and count the corrections the draft needs before you would sign it.
Does RuleX require a credit card for the trial?
The 7-day RuleX trial starts without a credit card. Create a U.S. account, add a matter and upload its documents.
What should I do after the trial?
