AI for Family Law Lawyers: Financial Disclosure to Final Papers
Build the financial disclosure, income schedules and draft pleadings for a family law matter in RuleX. Scanned statements become sourced Excel schedules.
The working answer
RuleX turns the financial documents of a family law matter into sourced schedules and draft papers. Upload up to 20 statements, pay stubs and returns at a time, including scans, and RuleX builds income, expense, asset and debt schedules in Excel with each line tied to its document. Counsel identifies the state, answers RuleX’s questions and edits the declaration in the Canvas.
01 / PRACTICE NOTES
Family law runs on documents the client brings in a shoebox.
A divorce or support matter starts with paper: bank and credit-card statements, pay stubs, tax returns, mortgage statements, retirement-account summaries, business records and months of messages. Many of them are photographs or scans. The attorney’s job is to turn that volume into a disclosure that is complete, consistent and defensible.
Create the matter in RuleX and choose Family law as the practice area. Upload the documents in batches of up to 20; OCR reads the scanned pages, and each document remains available to every later question. Then give the assignment: the client, the opposing party, the state and county, the children if any, the relief sought and the deliverable.
Because family law is state law, the state is the first fact in the assignment. RuleX asks for it when it is missing, and the research and drafting that follow are framed around that state’s statutes and court rules.
02 / PRACTICE NOTES
Income, expenses, assets and debts become sourced schedules.
Ask for an Excel workbook with four sheets: income by source, monthly expenses, assets and debts. Every line carries the statement it came from, the statement date and the page. Where two documents disagree, RuleX flags the difference so counsel can ask the client before the schedule is signed.
State rules shape what the schedule must contain. New York, for example, provides in Domestic Relations Law § 236(B)(4) for compulsory financial disclosure by both parties in matrimonial actions in which alimony, maintenance or support is in issue, and it calls for a sworn statement of net worth. Other states use their own forms and deadlines. Identify the governing state’s form and rule, then ask RuleX to map the workbook to it.
Support calculations begin with a complete income picture. Federal regulation 45 C.F.R. § 302.56 requires each state to establish child support guidelines, and the guidelines must take into consideration all earnings and income of the noncustodial parent. A schedule that lists every income source with its document makes the later guideline calculation straightforward to check.
- Choose Family law and name the state and county.
- Upload statements, pay stubs, returns and retirement records, up to 20 documents per upload.
- Ask for income, expense, asset and debt sheets with a source on every line.
- Resolve each flagged discrepancy with the client.
- Map the approved workbook to the state’s financial disclosure form.
03 / PRACTICE NOTES
Retirement assets and interstate cases have federal pieces to calendar.
When a retirement plan governed by ERISA is divided, a qualified domestic relations order is the instrument. Under 29 U.S.C. § 1056(d)(3)(C), the order must specify the name and last known mailing address of the participant and each alternate payee, the amount or percentage of benefits to be paid or how it will be determined, the number of payments or period to which it applies, and each plan to which it applies. Ask RuleX for a data sheet that collects those four items from the plan documents before drafting the order.
Custody and support orders can follow a family across state lines. 28 U.S.C. § 1738A provides full faith and credit for child custody determinations made consistently with its terms, and 28 U.S.C. § 1738B does the same for child support orders. When the children have lived in more than one state, ask RuleX for a residence-history chronology with dates, addresses and the document supporting each entry; it is the factual base for any jurisdictional analysis.
Tasks and dates belong to the matter. Add the response date for a financial affidavit, the date of a hearing and the plan administrator’s review timeline, and the case keeps a single schedule for the whole team.
04 / PRACTICE NOTES
RuleX asks first, then the declaration and the pleading are drafted beside the evidence.
Before drafting a declaration, a motion or a settlement proposal, RuleX asks what the matter needs: the relief sought, the parties’ positions on parenting time and support, the date of separation, whether there are pre-marital or inherited assets and which numbers the client has confirmed. Counsel’s answers become part of the matter.
The draft appears in the Canvas beside the schedules. A paragraph about monthly expenses draws from the expense sheet; a paragraph about a retirement account draws from its statement. Edit in place, ask for a more concise version or a more detailed one, and download Word for the filing format your court requires.
Use this working prompt: “Using the uploaded statements, build income, expense, asset and debt sheets with a source on each line. Flag any figure that two documents report differently. Ask me about the state, the children and the relief we are seeking, then draft the financial declaration for review.”
05 / PRACTICE NOTES
The other side’s disclosure goes next to your client’s.
Upload the opposing party’s financial declaration and supporting documents beside your own client’s file. Ask RuleX to compare the two: income by source, claimed expenses, listed accounts and debts, with a page cite for each difference. The comparison shows what the other side omitted, where figures do not match their own statements and which requests for documents to serve next.
Turn the gaps into discovery. RuleX drafts requests for documents and interrogatories keyed to the specific accounts, transactions and periods the comparison identified, using your state’s rules for the form. If the parties attend a recorded session or hearing, upload the audio and RuleX transcribes it with speaker identification, so a statement about income made in a hearing can be set beside the declaration.
06 / PRACTICE NOTES
Build the firm’s family law method once.
Create a RuleX agent for the practice: the sheets in the workbook, the questions asked at intake, the structure of the declaration and the checklist for retirement and interstate issues. Share it with the team. Each new matter begins with the same disciplined schedule, and each client’s facts stay in that client’s file.
Start with a matter whose numbers you already know. Compare the workbook with your own schedule, refine the instructions and keep the agent that matches how your court expects the disclosure to look.
