ChatGPT vs legal AI:
what a lawyer gets from RuleX for the work of a case
Lawyers adopted ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini early, and for good reason: they draft emails, explain concepts, translate and think a problem through at any hour. In 2026 the general assistants also reached legal tooling, with Claude for Legal in May and OpenAI's Astra for Law in September. This page answers a narrower question. When the work is a case, with a client's files, citations a judge will check and a brief that gets filed, what does a platform built around the case add?
RuleX is the legal AI for the work of a case: where ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answer a conversation, RuleX works a matter. It reads up to twenty files per message, researches official sources with every citation linked, asks up to three questions before drafting, counts deadlines on the court calendar of your country and delivers the brief in Word or PDF, with Excel from the chat. Matters keep tasks and dates, and e-signature and hearing transcription share the account. Prices are published in each of 20 countries, with a 7-day free trial with no card.
For the work of a case, choose RuleX.
Choose RuleX because the client's files live in a matter instead of a conversation, because every legal citation opens at its source, because the brief leaves as a Word file with native styles, and because deadlines, tasks, signature and transcription sit in the same account. The prices are published in each country, the confidentiality statements are published, and the trial lasts 7 days without a card.
How a case moves through RuleX
The same four moves whether the matter is a dismissal claim, a lease dispute or a company sale.
- Open the matter and load the fileUpload up to twenty files in one message: contracts, pay slips as scans, a hearing recording, exported chats. Scans go through OCR, audio and video are transcribed, and when the file is long RuleX reads each document separately, up to sixty documents with twenty in parallel.
- Ask with the source openPick Direct, Balanced or In depth. The answer arrives with each citation linked to the original statute, ruling or official concept, so reviewing it takes a click.
- Draft the documentThe Drafter asks up to three questions with selectable answers, writes in the Canvas beside the case file and exports to Word with native styles or to PDF.
- Run the caseDeadlines are counted with the holidays and non-business court days of the country. Tasks, dates and a log live in the matter. Signers receive a one-time code by email, and the sealed PDF carries a certificate anyone can verify.
Questions that come up when a lawyer moves from a chat to a platform
They appear the day occasional use becomes a daily routine with client information.
- Where do my client's documents live, and who in my firm can open them?
- Can I open the source of every statute and ruling cited to me, or do I search for each one myself?
- How do I work with twenty files without pasting them one at a time and losing the thread?
- What do I do with a recorded hearing, a scanned PDF or a photographed exhibit?
- Do I deliver by copying and pasting, or by downloading a Word file formatted as a pleading?
- Where do the dates of the case, its tasks and my hours live?
- How does my team share the procedure that worked, so that nobody reinvents it?
A dismissal after medical leave: from eight files to the complaint
A logistics driver in Bogotá was dismissed after a disciplinary hearing. His lawyer holds eight files: the employment contract in Word, eleven pay slips scanned into one PDF, the termination letter, the audio of the hearing, the exported WhatsApp chat with his supervisor, the social-security certificate and two medical incapacity certificates. She uploads them in one message to a new matter. RuleX reads the scan with OCR, transcribes the hearing and asks three questions: what he asks the court to order, the legal basis and the main fact. The start date and the last base salary are read from the contract and the pay slips, and any gap stays as a [BRACKETED] placeholder.
Labor complaint in Word
- The hearing transcribed into a document that the Drafter reads, and kept in the transcription history with the speakers and the roles the lawyer assigns.
- A chronology of the employment relationship, requested from the chat, with a column naming the document behind each event: contract clause, pay slip, message or minute of the recording.
- The observation that the first incapacity certificate predates the dismissal, which raises the question of reinforced job stability (estabilidad laboral reforzada), with the research linked to the original rulings.
- The ordinary labor complaint in Word, with numbered facts and principal and subsidiary claims.
- The filing deadlines counted on the Colombian court calendar and saved as dated tasks in the same matter.
How this comparison was made
RuleX publishes this page and competes with the general assistants, so the method is on the table. The facts about ChatGPT come from OpenAI's pricing and help-center pages; the facts about Claude come from the American Bar Association Journal's report of May 14, 2026 on Claude for Legal; the facts about Astra for Law come from Legal Cheek's report of September 18, 2026. All were checked on October 30, 2026, with the links listed below. Everything said about RuleX comes from the product and from rulex.org/pricing.
Gemini appears in the title because lawyers search for the three assistants together. The facts below rest on the published pages of OpenAI and Anthropic's legal launch.
What the general assistants do well
ChatGPT publishes a ladder of plans from Free to Enterprise with prices for the individual plans and per seat in Business. It reads documents, PDFs, images, spreadsheets and presentations, creates and edits documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and works from a sidebar in Word and PowerPoint. Projects gather instructions and files, with up to 40 files per project on Pro, Business and Enterprise according to OpenAI's help center. Its deep research can be connected to apps and limited to sites the user trusts. ChatGPT Business states that it does not train on company data by default and adds administration controls, SAML single sign-on and multi-factor authentication.
Claude for Legal, announced on May 12, 2026, connects Claude to 20 legal platforms, among them iManage, NetDocuments, Relativity, Everlaw, Docusign and Box, adds 12 practice-area plugins and integrates with Microsoft 365. Harvey and Thomson Reuters (CoCounsel Legal, Westlaw and Practical Law) connect to Claude, according to the ABA Journal. Legal Cheek reported on September 18, 2026 that OpenAI introduced Astra for Law, which combines its GPT-6 Astra model with legal research tools, with initial access for selected firms through ChatGPT and Codex and an API planned.
That is a wide field of general work: correspondence, translation, explanation, spreadsheets, brainstorming and first drafts. The rest of this page covers the part of the day that is the case.
What RuleX does for the work of a case
The file lives in a matter. Up to twenty files go in per message, in PDF, Word, Excel, images, audio and video. Scans are read with OCR (more than 400,000 pages so far). A file that fits is handed over whole; a long one is read document by document, up to sixty with twenty in parallel, so the detail of exhibit forty is not lost behind exhibit three.
Citations open. In Colombia, RuleX researches more than 65,000 official sources across 7 specialized indexes; in the other 19 countries it researches the official sources of the country. Each citation arrives linked to the original document.
The deadline is counted. The Deadline calculator uses the holidays and non-business court days of each of the 20 countries, including rules such as Bolivia's, where terms of up to fifteen days count business days and longer terms count calendar days. Pro, Ultra and Enterprise add billable-hours tracking, and in Colombia the nightly Rama Judicial check emails what moved and files the PDF in the matter.
The paper is delivered. The Drafter asks at most three questions, writes in the Canvas and exports Word with native heading styles, lists and page numbers. In production on October 28, 2026, a Colombian right-of-petition letter of about 900 words with four cited sources was complete about twenty seconds after the last answer to the Drafter's questions.
The hearing and the signature are inside the account. Transcription takes live microphone input or audio and video up to 2 GB and six hours, separates speakers and lets the lawyer assign the roles (Pro and Ultra). The record stays in the transcription history, and attached to a chat message or a Project it becomes a document that the assistant and the Drafter read. Signature sends each signer a six-digit one-time code by email and seals the PDF with a certificate that carries a SHA-256 fingerprint and a public verification page. The twelve PDF tools run in the browser.
And the team shares what works. Apps and agents are built by describing them, without code, and shared by expiring link or, in an Enterprise organization, under "Your firm". More than 4,000 professionals already work in RuleX.
Confidentiality: what RuleX publishes
A client's file deserves statements you can read and quote. RuleX publishes these on /seguridad and in its privacy policy:
Your case files are never used to train AI models. RuleX runs on paid business APIs of its AI providers, configured under terms that do not use API inputs for training, according to the providers' applicable terms. The copy of a document that the AI processes is uploaded with a requested expiration of one hour, and the original stays in your storage, served through short-lived signed URLs and never as a permanent public link. No case file is sold, shared with advertisers or exploited commercially. Data travels with encryption in transit. Files live inside a matter, shared with the people your firm designates.
The twelve PDF tools run entirely in the browser: the file never leaves your device.
The ethics file: ABA Formal Opinion 512, in practice
ABA Formal Opinion 512, issued on July 29, 2024, applies the Model Rules to generative AI. Competence (Rule 1.1) means a reasonable understanding of the tool and a review of its output, without becoming an expert. Confidentiality (Rule 1.6) can call for informed consent, and a boilerplate clause in the engagement letter does not do it. The opinion also covers communication with the client (1.4), reasonable fees (1.5), where the lawyer bills the time actually spent, and supervision (5.1 and 5.3).
A platform gives each duty something to hold. Review becomes a click, because each citation opens at its source. Confidentiality gets the published statements above, which are the facts to put in front of a client when asking for informed consent. Communication gets a matter log that records what was done. Fees get time tracking in Pro, Ultra and Enterprise. Supervision gets shared agents, so every lawyer in the firm runs the same checklist and the same report format.
