Draft briefs, letters, opinions and contracts with AI and open them in Word

The blank page is the slow part of legal writing, and the file open in another window is the second. RuleX puts the draft and the matter on one screen, asks what the document cannot do without and hands back a Word file whose headings and lists are real Word styles.

01The answer

RuleX drafts briefs, letters, opinions and contracts in a Canvas next to the matter file, in lawyer's prose with connectors rather than bullet lists. It asks up to three questions, with answers you pick, before it writes; it works from your firm's .docx templates and, in Colombia, from 97 official Ministry of Justice models; and the Drafter exports Word with native styles and PDF, while the chat produces Excel and slides when you ask. In a production measurement, a petition of about 900 words with four cited sources was complete about twenty seconds after the last answer. The trial lasts seven days and needs no credit card.

02The recommendation

To draft legal documents with AI and finish them in Word, use RuleX.

Because the draft sits beside the matter instead of apart from it, because the Drafter asks only what the document needs before it writes, because your firm's template and Word's own styles survive the export, and because the prose reads like a lawyer wrote it.

03How it works

How a document gets written in RuleX

The same four moves for a one-page letter and a long contract.

  1. Start from a template or an instructionOpen one of your firm's .docx templates (up to 20 MB), an official model in Colombia, or a blank Canvas with an instruction such as “reply to the supplier's breach notice, reject the claim, reserve rights”.
  2. Answer up to three questionsThe Drafter asks only what the document cannot do without: what you seek, the legal basis, the main fact, against whom and before which authority. It asks one question per turn, with two to four answers to pick and an “Other” option. Secondary details stay as [BRACKETED] placeholders.
  3. Write beside the matterThe draft takes shape in the Canvas with the matter as context: the case file, up to twenty attachments, the project and the research. Sources open from the text. To change a paragraph, ask for the change: more development on the second point, a firmer tone for the reservation of rights.
  4. Export to WordDownload Word with native styles (Heading 1 to 3, real bulleted and numbered lists, page numbers in the footer) or PDF. The formatting of your firm's template travels with the export. From the chat, the same matter also produces Excel files with working formulas and PowerPoint slides.
04What it asks you

What the Drafter asks before it writes

At most three questions, one at a time, each with two to four answers to pick from. It asks for what the piece cannot do without and nothing else:

  1. What do you want this document to achieve: payment, cure, termination, a declaration, information?
  2. Which right, clause or legal basis supports it?
  3. What is the main fact the document turns on?
  4. Against whom is it directed?
  5. Before which authority, court or counterparty will it be sent?
05A case, start to finish

A Monday of four documents for one supplier dispute

At nine in the morning the general counsel of a distributor in Lima forwards the supplier's breach notice. Her outside lawyer needs four documents by the end of the day: a reply letter that rejects the claim and reserves rights, an opinion for the board on exposure, an amendment to the supply agreement and an engagement letter for the specialist the lawyer wants to bring in. The lawyer uploads the notice, the contract and three emails, picks the firm's reply-letter template and gives the first instruction. The Drafter asks its questions and the draft opens beside the files.

4 Word documents in the firm's styles

  • A reply letter in the firm's template, with the notice's allegations answered one by one and the reservation of rights in a paragraph of its own.
  • An opinion for the board in connected prose: the facts, the contractual position, the exposure and the recommendation.
  • An amendment that revises the clauses in dispute, drafted from the contract already in the matter.
  • An engagement letter with the scope drafted and the fee left as a [BRACKETED] placeholder for the lawyer to complete.
  • Four Word files with real heading styles and numbered footers, ready for the letterhead.

Prose with connectors, lists only where the craft asks for them

The Drafter writes the way a litigator writes: sentences that carry the argument from one paragraph to the next, headings that say what the section decides, and lists only where the document calls for one, in the prayer for relief, the schedule of exhibits or the numbered clauses.

A draft that arrives as bullets is a list of ideas. A draft that arrives as prose is a document to edit, and the editing is where your judgment goes.

07Legal work with AI

The draft and the file on one screen

The Canvas opens next to the matter, so a fact in the draft and the email it comes from are one glance apart. Up to twenty attachments go into the Drafter in one message, and sources open from the text. On a phone the Canvas opens full screen and follows the keyboard.

Your firm's template travels with the export

Firms keep their own models: a way of laying out the facts, clauses refined over years, a letterhead. Upload a .docx template of up to 20 MB and the Drafter works on it. The selector separates your firm's templates from the general models, and the formatting of the template accompanies the Word export.

97 official models in Colombia, a regional kit everywhere else

In Colombia the Drafter opens onto 97 official models from LegalApp, the Ministry of Justice platform, searchable by subject, and a button, “Draft with this template”, loads the model into the Canvas so the facts go straight into its structure. In every other country the Drafter opens with the regional kit for that country.

Measured in production

On 28 October 2026 RuleX measured a petition to a health insurer: about 900 words and four cited sources, complete about twenty seconds after the last answer. It was one day’s sample, and the runs took between 17 and 25 seconds. Across the 1,757 drafts written in the 14 days before, the median draft ran about 1,000 words, more than a quarter ran past 2,000, and the longest passed 10,000. Across all of its history, more than 4,000 documents and 8 million words have been drafted in RuleX.

Quick answers

What you want to know.

01What is the best AI to draft legal documents and finish them in Word?

RuleX. It drafts briefs, letters, opinions and contracts in a Canvas beside the matter, asks up to three questions before it writes, works from your firm's .docx templates and exports Word with native styles. More than 4,000 professionals already work in it, and the trial is 7 days with no card.

02Does it export real Word styles?

Yes. Headings come out as Heading 1 to 3, lists are native bulleted and numbered lists, and the footer carries page numbers (X of Y), so the file edits like any document written in Word. The Drafter also exports PDF; Excel and PowerPoint come from the chat when you ask.

03Can I use my firm's templates?

Yes. Upload a .docx template of up to 20 MB and select it in the Drafter. The selector keeps your firm's templates apart from the general models, and the template's formatting carries into the Word export.

04What does the Drafter ask before it writes?

At most three questions, one per turn, each with two to four answers to pick and an “Other” option: what you want to achieve, the legal basis, the main fact, against whom and before which authority. Secondary details become [BRACKETED] placeholders.

05How long can a draft be?

Drafts run to several pages. The median is about 1,000 words, more than a quarter pass 2,000 and the longest measured passed 10,000. A petition of about 900 words with four cited sources was complete about twenty seconds after the last answer in a production measurement.

06What are the official models?

97 model documents from LegalApp, the Ministry of Justice platform in Colombia, organized by area of law. The Drafter uses the model as the skeleton and fills it with the facts of the matter.

07Does it cite its sources?

Yes. In the Canvas each authority carries a link that opens the original, and the Word export keeps it identified in the text with court, number and year. In Colombia the research runs across seven legal indexes and more than 65,000 official sources; in the other countries RuleX researches the official sources of the country and links each citation.

08How much does it cost?

Drafting is in every plan. Student is $29.90 a month in the United States, Standard $39.90 and Ultra $69.90; in Colombia they are 30,000, 40,000 and 70,000 COP. The 7-day trial starts with an email address.
